First Synod - Our Covenant and Resolve
From the Agenda for the First Synod, United Reformed Churches in North America
We as delegates from the independent churches associated with the Alliance of Reformed Churches meeting in Lynwood, Illinois, on November 14-16, 1995, decided by an overwhelming vote to establish a new federation of churches, temporarily named Fellowship of Uniting Reformed Churches. This action was taken in the firm belief that it was done in obedience to God's inspired, infallible and inerrant Word, and in full agreement with the Three Forms of Unity, namely, the Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession and the Canons of Dort.
Thus steadfastly committed to the Reformed faith and life, and so that this precious heritage may be preserved for us and our children and our children's children, we hereby covenant and resolve to participate in the establishment of this new communion of Reformed churches. It is our sincere belief and conviction that God in His holy providence has led us in paths marked by struggle, much soul-searching and prayer to this point where we, by His grace, must make a fresh start in the building of His church.
Looking to God in prayerful dependence on His blessing upon our efforts, we would move forward in faith and determination to do joyfully the work that Christ our Lord has assigned to His church. May the Lord fill us with His Holy Spirit so that His Word may be faithfully preached and taught, His name praised in God-centered worship, and His church governed in a manner that honors its glorious Head. It is our earnest hope and prayer that others committed to the Reformed faith and life will join us in this endeavor to renew the church of Christ our Lord. We cordially invite them to do so.
